The Training Visa (subclass 407) is a great alternative to people looking to develop their skills and is often a viable alternative to applicants that do not meet the requirements for a TSS (subclass 482) visa.

The Training Visa requires an eligible business to sponsor someone to work for the business whilst undertaking structured workplace training by the employer.

These visas can be granted for up to two years however it is important to note that dependent visa holders are only entitled to work 20 hours per week whilst holding this visa.

Occupational training required for registration

Applicants can apply for a Subclass 407 Training Visa under this stream if they are required to undertake workplace-based training to get registration, membership or licensing in their occupation. The registration, membership or licensing must be mandatory to work in the occupation in Australia or overseas.

Occupational Training Required For Registration

This Training visa stream is available for people who must undertake a period of workplace-based training to get occupation registration, membership or licencing.

The registration, membership or licensing must be mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

Three-Step Process For The Subclass 407 Visa

Applying for the Training Visa (subclass 407) is a three-step process that involves both the sponsoring employer and the applicant.

Step 1: Applying to become an Approved Temporary Activities Sponsor

The sponsoring business will need to become an approved Temporary Activities sponsor. This approval will be valid for a period of five years from the date it is approved and will allow the business to sponsor applicants to apply for further temporary activity visas during the approval period.

Step 2: Applying for a Temporary Activities Nominatio

The sponsoring business is required to submit a nomination that outlines the nomination type, proposed training program, skills, qualifications and experience required for the position and the identified person that is nominated to fill the position.

The nomination must provide evidence of a direct employment arrangement unless an exemption applies, and must provide trainees with remuneration that is aligned with Australia’s workplace laws.

Step 3: Applying for a Training Visa (Subclass 407)

A subclass 407 visa application for the nominee is required to be lodged that provides identity, financial capacity, health insurance, English ability and skills and qualifications. It is critical that the nominee has at least 12 months of experience (this can be based on academic qualifications or actual work experience) in the last 24 months in the nominated occupation.
