Subclass 407 Visa

The Training Visa (subclass 407) is a great alternative to people looking to develop their skills and is often a viable alternative to applicants that do not meet the requirements for a TSS (subclass 482) visa.

The Training Visa requires an eligible business to sponsor someone to work for the business whilst undertaking structured workplace training by the employer.

​

These visas can be granted for up to two years however it is important to note that dependent visa holders are only entitled to work 20 hours per week whilst holding this visa.

Training Visa (Subclass 407) Basic Eligibility Requirements

Employers wishing to nominate someone on a Training (subclass 407) visa must first become an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor and submit a Temporary Activity Nomination.

Work/Study Experience

 

You must have at least 12 months of experience in the last 24 months related to your nominated occupation. Experience can be in the form of ‘work experience’ or ‘study experience’ meaning you have undertaken at least one year of study related to your occupation in the last 24 months.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

This type of occupational training is a common pathway that is used for an individual to receive on the job training. This training covers people who are nominated by an approved temporary activity sponsor in Australia for an occupation that is listed on the relevant skilled occupations list.

A workplace-based structured training program is critical to the success of this application and must be specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person.

Occupational training for capacity building overseas

The requirements under this stream of the subclass 407 visa are for Occupational training for capacity building overseas which includes people that:

  • Wish to complete a period of practical training/research or observation in Australia for their overseas qualification

  • Have the support of a government agency in Australia or overseas to undertake training in Australia

  • Overseas employers to send their employees to Australia for professional development

Occupational training required for registration

Applicants can apply for a Subclass 407 Training Visa under this stream if they are required to undertake workplace-based training to get registration, membership or licensing in their occupation. The registration, membership or licensing must be mandatory to work in the occupation in Australia or overseas.

  • is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person

  • is in an occupation that is specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations for the SC407 visa

  • is for a nominee that has at least 12 months full-time experience (either by study or work experience) in the last 24 months before the nomination is lodged


Professional Development

 

Structured workplace-based training with a sponsoring Australian organisation that:

  • is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person

  • is in an occupation that is specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations for the SC407 visa

  • is for a nominee that has at least 12 months full-time experience (either by study or work experience) in the last 24 months before the nomination is lodged

Occupational Training Required For Registration


This Training visa stream is available for people who must undertake a period of workplace-based training to get occupation registration, membership or licencing.

The registration, membership or licensing must be mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

Three-Step Process For The Subclass 407 Visa


Applying for the Training Visa (subclass 407) is a three-step process that involves both the sponsoring employer and the applicant.

​

Step 1: Applying to become an Approved Temporary Activities Sponsor

 

The sponsoring business will need to become an approved Temporary Activities sponsor. This approval will be valid for a period of five years from the date it is approved and will allow the business to sponsor applicants to apply for further temporary activity visas during the approval period.

Step 2: Applying for a Temporary Activities Nominatio

 

The sponsoring business is required to submit a nomination that outlines the nomination type, proposed training program, skills, qualifications and experience required for the position and the identified person that is nominated to fill the position.

The nomination must provide evidence of a direct employment arrangement unless an exemption applies, and must provide trainees with remuneration that is aligned with Australia’s workplace laws.

Step 3: Applying for a Training Visa (Subclass 407)

A subclass 407 visa application for the nominee is required to be lodged that  provides identity, financial capacity, health insurance, English ability and skills and qualifications. It is critical that the nominee has at least 12 months of experience (this can be based on academic qualifications or actual work experience) in the last 24 months in the nominated occupation.

What is the length of the 407 visa? The Training Visa (subclass 407) can be granted for a period of up to two years. This visa cannot be extended past the expiry date, and you will be required to apply for a further visa to stay in Australia.
